Notes from The Pack
Our camps intro series shares a little more about the camps and lodges that make up The Pack and takes you a little deeper into each property.
Camp Khwai is located along the Khwai river in the well-known and game rich Khwai area.
Situated on an external bend in the river the main area and rooms overlook an expansive flood plain and the river into Moremi Game Reserve. The sunrise over the river is a special sight and a great way to start a day exploring and experiencing the wildlife sightings this area offers including its wild dog packs, lion prides and consistent leopard sightings. The variable landscape offers open floodplains, ancient leadwood forests, stark dead umbrella thorn silhouettes and the river that runs through it all, attracting game to its banks.
Game drives are fun adventures here with multiple regions to explore and discover including adventuring out at night to see the nocturnal sights. Additionally, drives can be done in Moremi Game Reserve accessed by the bridge over the river Khwai and in through the North gate. This variety of driving areas, landscapes and sights means that 3 days in Khwai are easily filled. Additionally, there is the option of taking a mokoro trip on a lagoon, which allows you to meander through the water and view wildlife from a different angle and pace. The community of Khwai village can also be visited from the camp and offers insight into what it is like to live life amongst the animals.
The camp is nestled into evergreen blue bush and these shrubs hug the main area and tents creating a sense of seclusion and privacy. Guests are welcomed in through an impressive entrance with seating and bag drop space that opens up into a vast thatched main area. A casual bar area that invites you to help yourself, looks out onto the floodplain over an intimate seating area complete with an incredibly inviting swinging day bed. A secondary seating area looks over a sunken lounge that offers plenty of space to spread out and relax with easy access to the fire deck that juts out into the floodplain offering closer views of the passing wildlife and a chance to enjoy a fire under the stars.
Imaginative and fresh meals are set up in various locations throughout the day. Breakfast is served around the fire and flexible table arrangements allow for lunch and dinner to be indoors or on the outdoor deck. A swimming pool with a dedicated pool deck sits to the side of the main area close enough to easily get a drink and appreciate the view whilst being private.
The rooms are tented on raised decks looking out towards the sunrise and morning light which are enhanced by the large front windows and vertically rolled blinds. Large windows allow a gentle breeze through the tents which is enhanced by an overhead fan. The rooms include large desks and storage space and USB and international plug charging points. The bathrooms have a double vanity with space and a wardrobe along with a walk-in shower. Directors’ chairs and a low deck rail that doubles up as a bench provide plentiful outdoor seating and a spot to enjoy the view whilst relaxing between activities.
Camp Khwai offers access to a beautiful area full of great game sightings and a combination of dry woodland and river and floodplain views. This well-priced and positioned camp is comfortable and understated with beautiful touches that enhance your bush experience.
