Notes from The Pack

Our camps intro series shares a little more about the camps and lodges that make up The Pack and takes you a little deeper into each property.

Mogogelo Camp offers all you want from a dry Okavango bush camp. Good game viewing, easy access and a variable and interesting landscape.

Situated in the Sankuyo community concession (NG 33) Mogogelo is located south of Moremi Game Reserve with the road leading to South Gate passing through the concession. This great location means it is easily reachable by road from Maun for those looking to drive themselves, by helicopter with a scenic flight over the Gomoti waterways from Maun or by fixed-wing aircraft into the Santawani airstrip. Moremi Game Reserve’s South Gate is an hour away and easily accessible from camp as a full-day trip (at an additional charge) if guests would like to explore Moremi. Still, with great wildlife in the area and a varied landscape, there is no need to explore further than the concession Mogogelo
sits on.

The camp is named after the dry Mogogelo valley which runs through the area providing a choice of natural pans, beautiful Vachellia erioloba (Camelthorn) forests and undulating landscape. It is a very pretty area in the green season when a carpet of lawn sits under the trees and a rather harsh but dramatic landscape once dry with fallen branches sitting on thick bare sand. Regardless of the season the pan in front of the camp is the true attraction of the area. This natural pan is pumped year-round and this consistent supply of fresh water results in a constant flow of wildlife past the pan.

In an is dominated by elephants who congregate around the water over the hotter hours of the day which also conveniently coincide with the perfect hours to sit on your tent’s front deck catching a breeze or to enjoy the cool waters of the swimming pool which creates the perfect arm-chair safari experience. Year-round the pan is a place to watch antelope and warthogs drinking and wallowing and our resident lion pride (currently 19 lions strong) has taken to doing the same which has resulted in dramatic kills in front of camp and regular sightings from camp.

The Pack Mogogelo room deck entrance

The camp is built in a semi-circle around this pan with all 10 tents enjoying a view of the pan whilst also being well spaced from each other. All rooms are meru tents on elevated decks with front decks with outdoor seating. The tents include a desk with a charging station, extra-length king-sized beds with mosquito nets, bedside lights and standing fans. Wardrobes provide hanging space and shelves and the en-suite bathroom includes generous anity space and a walk-in shower. These well-laid-out and simple yet comfortable and spacious tents have room for an extra bed to create a triple (or quad for younger children) for families.

A fireside boma juts out from camp towards the pan and offers a spot to enjoy a coffee in the morning sunshine or to share tales over the fire before dinner. Dining is out under the shade of the camelthorns, next to the fire in the evenings or under the thatch roof weatherdep endent. Meals are buffet style for the most part offering family fare and traditional dishes. The bar can be accessed from the pool as well as the dining area and a separate thatched gazebo houses the lounge offering a quiet spot to retreat to.

Mogogelo is owned by Mock Motlapele who has run the successful Tamog tours and safaris mobile operation for many years. Mock has successfully negotiated with the local Sankuyo community for the right to build Mogogelo and works closely with the community. As such a stay at Mogogelo is an opportunity to have your stay make a high impact on a local community who live surrounded by wildlife. Additionally Mock has assisted a neighbouring community in developing a mokoro polling station which is accessible as a day-trip from Mogogelo for those guests who are looking to experience a mokoro and are not visiting a water-based camp during their trip.

In summary this charming bush camp offers an easy-to-access, game rich experience combined with a comfortable stay that pairs very well with our other The Pack properties.
